I have a 19' Keywest 1900 CC with a 1985 Johnson 120 Looper.
I have the XP150 on my motor stand getting some work done.

My question is, from personal experience only which is a better built/reliable motor?

I'm not talking about condition of my present motors I'm talking about comparing the 2 motors in reliability an its engine in whole.

I know the 120 looper has the plastic carb warpage issues as I just went through it.

Please your personal experience hands on is appreciated.

Thank you!

I'd go with the '89 xp150. JMHO. Never did like those 120 loopers.

The XP hasn't ran in months an will be on the stand for at least a couple weeks, just checked compression dry an again hasn't ran in months an its between 87-95 psi, yes these are low compression motors I understand but it even still has the factory paint not chipped or faded on the steering arm. A little rust on the head bolts but will end up putting new head gaskets on an new bolts.

Quite a difference in horsepower between the two. The 150XP/GT engines were the high performance bass engines from OMC. They put out 10% more than the cowling says, or about 165 hp. The 120 looper is 2000 cc, the V6 is 2448 cc. More cubic inches=more torque. The loopers were heavy-the V6 (386) is only about 10 lbs heavier than the V4 looper (378). The 89 XP may also have plastic carb bowls-which will eventually become leakers too. Go with the 150XP.
