So a buddy of mine was driving his boat wide open, when all of a sudden the boat just stopped moving but the engine was still reving high. He was able to put it in gear and slowly drive it in, but give it any gas and it just revs up. Once he got it to the bank he trimmed it up and it looked like the prop has moved away from the lower unit housing as seen in photo. So then we took the prop of and chunks of a rubber substance from a gasket maybe?? took the lower unit bolt out and found shards of metal on the magnet. Any suggestions on what would cause the prop to move away from housing? and small pieces of metal? Did he blow the lower unit?

This photo shows the gap

This shows where the rubber chunks cam from

This shows the metal

You just spun the hub of the prop...Take the prop to a prop-shop and have it rehubbed...or replace the prop. No big deal...it happens all the time. As far as the metal gear dust on the drain screw? Man, that may be an issue. Is the lower unit shifting ok? For what its worth, don't let the gearcase "grinnnnnnd " into gear. Just shift that puppy into gear solidly. What did the fluid look like when you pulled the drain plug?

The prop is not in mounting up correctly on the shaft-maybe due to the spun rubber hub. The picture of the prop on the lower unit shows it is maybe 3/4 of on inch too far aft. That step in the front of the prop should next inside the lower unit casing. As it is, with the prop too far aft, the exhaust gas will bleed out at the front of the prop, causing the exhaust bubbles to ventilate the prop on takeoff-making it very difficult to plane the boat.

The boat shifts into gear (both forward and reverse), but does clack going into gear if you do it too slow (like most outboards). Gear oil was definitely old, but did not have metal in it nor did it look bad (was not thick, foamy, and no water), but was about 2 1/2 years old. So a spun hub would make the prop move forward like that? There is a metal disk that sits in between the prop and the lower unit, is this disk suppose to sit up against the lower unit?

All props require a forward thrust washer. The washer slips onto the propshaft first. The tapered hole in the washer fits over the taper of the propshaft, then the prop is installed. The prop requires a specific part numbered washer.
