One step forward.... So I have had this girl running and changed out the fuels lines and cleaned the gas and it fired up and 10 seconds later.. nothing. Went through fuel, spark, compression. After pulling the flywheel to check the "new coils, points, condensor" the Sheer pin was split in half vertically. Now the Question, what is the correct torque amount for the nut on top of the flywheel???? I have seen many post's and comments everywhere that are very conflicting. I got 45lbs to 115lbs. I appreciate all the help I get from you, I am almost there just need one more, unitl the next thing:lol:

From an old man with an old " yellow paper " manual.---------The torque value is listed at 60 / 65 ft-lbs.----This is for the 55 to 59 models.------------------As you know from the previous information that the internet is a very " good " scource for " bad " information.

Thank you Racerone, Question is there any variance in Key ways on this motor? I will go to my local dealer to get 2 of them and will bring my damaged one, but was there more than one size made for this model?

Just one as far as I know.------------Folks do get into trouble with harware store keys as they are not always the same.--------As you know the key locates the flywheel for proper ignition .----The locking tapers drive the flywheel.--------It might be a good idea to use some valve grinding compound on the tapers.----Lap them together to get a perfect fit

I remember the term lapping from High school metal shop, isn't that a polishing compound? Its not a thing of beauty now but maybe later on "after I get her running" I will think about cleaning her up.

1957 key was part number 302602. Very Important!!!: Flywheel and crankshaft tapers must be CLEAN and DRY. Then torque the nut to 60-65 ft/lbs. Failure to do so will result in sheared key and possible flywheel and/or crankshaft damage.

BTW, it is not a "shear pin". That goes in the prop.

This not about polishing and making it pretty !------It has to do with getting a proper fit between the crank and flywheel so that the key does not shear again.
