i was able to clean the tilt rod by pushing all the sands and rusts out of the tube, so will use it as is by cleaning the rust a bit

Your local machine shop may have a drill / reamer to clean out the bore of the tube.

I did this using 1/2 steel bar from home depot, but my Johnson outboard 90hp is 5/8" and I mounted the motor onto board already, so now I have to remove it and clean it with 5/8" spade drill bit, or

i cleaned it with 1/2 steel bar but not enough for my steering cable of 5/8", so will have to lift my motor out of my boat to grind it with my 5/8" spade drill bit
