I have a 1989 150 HP Evinrude outboard, I keep the boat in a slip. When the motor is tilted out of the water I get a small residue of fuel that seems to leak in the splash area, if I leave the motor down it doesn't seem to leak at all.

I took the cover off & tilted it, but can't see anything obvious. Ant thought on what to look for?

Thanks/Jerry

Could be a leaky air box cover with a bad gasket.

Re: 1989 150 HP Evinrude Gas Leak

The early crossflow carbs did tend to "leak" a little fuel when tilted up. Through the years, the carbs improved on that fault. My 79 V6 leaked somewhat. My 83 V6 does not have that problem. Not sure why yours does. Possible the plastic carb bowls are leaking somewhat-a common problem with them-esp when they are not level. Also, could be a float problem in the carbs. I agree, your airbox gasket may be missing, or torn near the bottom. If you want to know more about where it is leaking, put a dry rag under each carb and see where the rag gets soaked with fuel/oil.
