Shift Cable Adjustment 1978 v4 85hp

First thing, don't bash me I read the sticky on cable install . I'm running this motor on the hose and checking for forward and reverse engagement. Forward engages properly but reverse clicks about 10+ times before engaging. My shift rod height has been verified. What should I adjust?

Have you got the trunion adjusted properly on the cable ?? If you do, you may have a bad dog and gear. You also may have a lot of slop in the cable.
