84-02 evinrude/johnson 20-35hp drive shaft bearing depth

When installing new drive shaft seals, I think I drove the drive shaft bearing further down into the housing. Does anyone know the depth the bearing is supposed to be at? The manual calls for special tool 322923 but I can't find it on internet.

That's why they make special tools. You should have measured the depth before you pulled it. Maybe somebody will chime in with the spec.

I wish I had measured it as well. I didn't realize the bearing could be driven down when installing the seals.

Ok so I found a 322923 tool and ordered it. Can someone help me with a picture or info on tool 318122. It says washer as description. Is this just a large washer that picks up the top of the gear case housing?

The 318122 is just the plate that sits on top of the gear case. You will also need 322923 installer. Also a 1/2-13 x 1 " screw to hold the installer on the plate.

Thanks so much boobie! I didn't really want to spend $26 for a plate with a hole in it. I did order 322923 and will fabricate something to use in place of 318122. I keep messing up the part number.

You're doing fine. Just make up the plate and go from there.
