Most engines have a fuse in the system. It would help if you would post the model number so that we knew exactly what engine you have.

1985 150hp I guess. Yes there is a 20A fuse. It's in a red bullet-shaped thing in the harness on top of the engine. One red and one red/purple wire goes to it.

Found it n that fixed it... Sadly tach still doesn't work? It charges the batteries, it can run with the hot terminal off... So rectifier/regulator is good... Plus a brand new tach? Why won't it work???

Don't assume that the rectifier is good unless you actually tested with a meter. It can be your problem for sure. If after you verify the rectifier is good and your tach still doesn't work, check the wires for any breaks or insulation rubbed off possible shorting the signal going to the tach...

If your 'hot terminal' is the battery positive terminal then it's likely you have cooked your rectifier.
The engine charging system has nothing to do with the ignition system.
