77 Johnson 140, stalls when put in either gear

It runs and idles fine when on a hose, shifts and throttle/speed advances only on hose. In Lake it stalls immediately. Not able to take the prop load and advance, it just bogs down and quits. Somewhat hard to start after that.

They all just bark and sound wonderfull on a hose.----------You need to report the compression numbers and test you have spark on all 4 cylinders.

Like r1 said. They can be running on 2 cyls & sound great on a hose. Check yer spark'n compression.

Correct. That engine will seem to run just fine, sitting on the trailer, running on the garden hose-when actually running on only 2 or 3 cyls. Once you dunk it in the water, the exhaust is 20" underwater and you put it in gear, you need all 4 cyls firing. Check your spark-esp after the engine is fully warmed up. Either a cyl drop test, or use an inductive timing light to check spark on each plugwire.

Do the cylinder drop test as Emds suggested.

Thanks guys ! Found a bad a bad power pack and then a bad coil which had a crack in the case. Engine ran great on first trial, then second time out it would no go to full speed so found another bad coil. Running fine now.
