This motor hasn't been ran in years. I have gotten it to where I can get it to fire up, but cannot get it to run more than a few seconds without dying at idle. If I am not mistaken, it is running too lean.

When do I use the dials, and when do I use the screw adjustments?

What would I need to do to get it to idle?

Thanks for any help.

If it hasn't run in yrs rebuild the carb on it and see what happens.

If it was put away w/carb full of fuel....

anyway, low speed 1.5 turns out.. high speed 3/4 and tune from there, if carb isn't gunked.

But what do I tune? Screw adjustments? Knob adjustments? What gets tweaked first?

What purpose to they serve, if not for carb adjustment?

The two screws with pan heads are just fixing screws .

The slow speed and high speed mixture adjusting "screws" are above and below them. Top one , which appears to have lost its knob, is the slow speed adjustment. The bottom one is the high speed adjustment.

Turning them clockwise makes the mixture leaner, while turning them counter clockwise make it richer.

The full adjustment instructions, written by Joe Reeves, can be found on on the Engine FAQs board at http://forums.iboats.com/engine-fre...sorted-carb-variations-joe-reeves-167352.html

See the second section for "Two Adjustable N/Vs"

Thank you, gentlemen. The motor ran consistantly well for the first time in years - considering it was in a 5 gallon bucket. We are all locked up yet with ice, so the real test will come once the soft water comes to town.

On a different note, if I am looking for a new gas cap, is there anything that fits these old motors?

Tecumseth makes a vented gas cap which is a good fit...can't remember the number. Measure the inside diameter needed. I have purchased several on ebay. It will be black plastic with a vent screw on the top.
