So, I have the lower unit in a vice and have removed two snaprings, a rubber bushing, washer, and am to the bearings. The prop shaft is surrounded by what looks like a threaded cap. Am I on the right track? I just don't want to risk breaking this piece if I start beating on it to see if it will unthread. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are attacking it from the wrong end. You are trying to get the prop shaft out, right? Remove 201874 "Bearing housing locking screw". That will release 276321 "Prop haft bearing housing", and you can just pull it out, shaft and all.
