Hello all. New member here. Looking forward to joining the discussion.

I recently acquired a boat I'll be restoring powered by a 1960 Johnson 40 (RD-22). The motor is stuck, which I knew. I'll be trying Aero-Kroil or ATF/acetone to try to free it up.

I may have the opportunity to acquire a 1962 Evinrude 40 power head. It consists of what is referred to in the parts catalog as the "power head group" plus the "crankshaft group". No fuel or ignition peripherals, starter, or flywheel. If I can't free up the Johnson, would this Evinrude be a direct drop-in replacement head? All of the other required peripherals would need to be scavenged from the Johnson. Or, would it make more sense to continue to search for a 1960 or 1961 power head?

Thanks for you guidance.

The newer power head fits.-----Some off the 1960 stuff may fit on it.

Yes the powerhead will bolt up, but NO it will not work for what you need. If you had the flywheel, ignition and all you may be able to make it work, but you cannot use your current flywheel and such with the '62 powerhead. Sorry.

Keep looking for a 60, 61 powerhead. Well, after you try to free it up, might not be too bad, and just stuck rings.

Best to look for a 40 HP block with the hot air choke that has all the goodies on it.----The early 40's used a hot water choke.
