Connecting tachometer 1986 Evinrude 30hp

I want to install a tach on my boat, I am having a hard time finding out which wire is the signal wire for the tachometer, I believe it is the Yellow/Gray wire. If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. It is a 1986-1987 Evinrude 30hp, not sure about the model number as it is unreadable. Thanks in advanced.

You are correct.... it is the Yellow wire with a Gray stripe at the engine's rectifier terminal strip.

If the engine has a wiring harness leading to the dash/instrument panal/control box... it would be the plain Gray wire at those areas.

Set the tach to position # 5.
