I have a 1978 Glastron with a 1978 200HP Johnson Crossflow. In the last week I swapped the head and all the electronics to a 1989 150 crossflow. I would have switched the entire unit, however, I was dealing with a 20 inch versus my current 25 inch motor. I did not replace the hydraulic motor. Now the old 78 hydraulic motor moves incredibly slow and the wire gets hot which concerns me. Should/can I pull the 89 hydraulic motor and complete the switch and will the 89 electric motor match up correctly with my 78 hydraulic unit? Is there anyway to pull the electric motor without removing the entire unit from the boat? Better yet is there an easy fix to get my 78 hydraulic motor running properly with the 89 engine and electronics?

Thanks for any help and advice, it's been a while since I've written, things have ran well for many years now! Good to see Joe Reeves and emdsapmgr are still around.

How many wires on the 78 motor ?--Usually there are 3 wires on the 78 with box mounted inside the boat.---The 89 uses a 2 wire motor and 89 electronics will not run a 78 motor.

There are three wires on the 78 blue black and green. The 89 does have two a blue and a green. I figured the ground on the 89 was ran through the body as I noticed it has a wire attaching to the body of the tilt and trim unit.? From the 78 I attached the blue green wires to the blue green of the 89. I then attached the black to the engine block.

If this is a no no any advice on swapping the hydraulic motors?

Do you know if the 78 and 89 hydraulic motors can be swapped? What I mean to say is currently I have an 89 engine and electronics on the 1978 exhaust housing along with the 78 hydraulics. Do I need to swap out the entire hydraulic unit so it matches with the 89 engine or can I move just the 89 hydraulic motor?
