jw 10 rope start install

jw10 recoil.jpg can i just neatly "knot the rope" , or is that crimped on end essential ?( just not sure why a "knot" was "not" used, unless a "knot" was "not" an option. lol)

That was a special rope made just for those motors. I don't think they are available anymore but I've seen some after market nylon ones with the same connector on the end. The original one had a cable core inside of it and the end was soldered on which you have there.

Actually, you can use a nylon rope with a knot. However, you must be extra careful not to pull the rope all the way to the end. If you do, it will cut the knotted end off, the pulley will go flying back, and destroy the recoil spring. If you get lucky enough, there is such a thing as a later model pulley designed for a knotted rope. It has a pin that prevents pulling the sharp edge against the knot. I have also retrofitted a few old pulleys with a pin.
