Hello I have a 1964 evinrude 75 up electric shift the motor fires right up but leaks a grey sludge from the lower unit weep holes and when in forward gear the boat starts to die when full throttle after about 4 minutes. Also the boat shoots out a good amount of smoke when cruising slow

The grey sludge is quite normal for that motor.--------------You might want to check the float valve in the carburetor.----It could be leaking.-----------You might want to check the diaphragm in the fuel pump for a hole.-------That diaphragm is readily available at any OMC / BRP dealer.----If you do not know how old the water pump impeller is you should install a new one.------The fuel mix is 50:1 for that motor.-----Is it smoke or are you referring to water vapour from idle relief port.

What's the compression on it ?? Will the spark jump a 1/4" open air gap ?? Those are the things you check before digging into the carb.

Why do you say that ?? There must be a reason as old as the motor is.

Heck , I thought it was common knowledge that OMC started promoting 50: 1 in 1964-------And if you look in the parts books there is no difference parts wise between 63 and 64 modekls.

nick, do as boobie says: rule out the obvious first. compression, spark, visual inspection of fuel/water/vacuum lines and wiring

They say 50:1 even on the small motors, but as far as I am concerned the 3 HP motor with plain bearings on rods should still be run at 24:1

Actually, in 1964 they said 50:1 ONLY if Johnson or Evinrude oil was used. That was the old early TCW oil, not II or -3. I'll offer no opinion as to the difference in today's TC-W3, compared with that. Y'all can argue among yourselves about that. And the war will never end.

Racer one , now your talking. They told us years ago in service school that if the motor had plain bearings in the rods use 24:1. Anything with a compliment of full needle bearings in the rods you could use 50:1.

Now I think we should get back to the OP's original question. Haven't heard from him.
