Hey fellers. I want to replace the washer and shift shaft seal. Is the stock washer brass? If it is I believe that the peice down at the pictured housing needs to come out correct?

Yes that brass looking part is indeed brass with an "O" ring and a gasket there as well. If you look up your O/B and see the break down of that area you will see how those parts are installed. And it takes a special tool to remove that brass plug and "O" ring and gasket. I had the exact same problem and make the special rod to press (actually hammered) it out and replace. If you are really careful you can remove that brass plug and reuse it. I wasn't so lucky not knowing what or how it was installed and damaged the inside of it where the actual rod goes through and had to replace it. Not expensive though. I'd post an actual picture but my computer is not working very well right now.

You can use a piece of 1/4" threaded rod with a nut that is filed down to pull it out.-----You can use a 5/16"-NC tap to put say 3 threads into it an pull it out.----I have used both methods --no problems.

Re: '74 evinrude 15hp shift shaft seal

Thanks guys! I made a puller out of 1/4-20 all thread and pulled her out. All te gasket sealer they used on it really kept that girl I there!! I even bent 1/4 steel plate as I screwed down to it. The filed down nut worked great. Thanks fellas.

Now I have a little problem. All is well and I got the whole gearcase back together. Detent balls are in place because it pops into gear perfectly. But I made a booboo and tapped the driveshaft seal in about 1/8" too far. You can see in the photos.

It looks to me that the seal, even if in its proper position will hold water under the waterpump even after it "drains" my concern is the with the seal a bit lower than factory that it will contain more water and will possibly freeze up and break something.

So I need your opinions guys. This is a spring/summer/ fall motor and comes off the boat after each trip. Do I fork out the $20 and 1/2 hour ride and go get two new seals, pulling these fresh seals out? Or do I let it ride with confidence?
This is a friends motor also.

I guess another option could be for me to drive another seal in on top of the top one. Shouldn't hurt anything if it goes down deep enough right?

Let it ride. If the motor comes off of the boat and laid down there should be no problem.

Cool thanks bob. Good learning experience for me. Not sure what I was thinking..... Anyways if water were to set in there at wintertime, since the water has somewhere to expand it shouldnt crack anything right? Thanks for your input. It's my buddies motor just don't wanna give him any issues.

Not yet my friend. That's a tomorrow project before I slap on the waterpump housing.

you may have "enhanced" the sealing aspect if the seal is now riding on a virgin part of the d/s

I am, thanks to you. I am in the health care field, and for some reason I just want to work on outboards all day. And I love to fish, and want to live on or near the water. I am seriously considering delving deeper into the outboard repair scene.

If you stay in the health care field you'll always have a job as my wife is a nurse. But I don't blame you 'cause I've always worked on outboards and really enjoyed it.
