they are different, at least the block is a different part, the 115 does share a case with the 100

You may find that the 85 / 90 HP blocks had smaller intake ports.

The kits fit the different carbs 'cause they are the same externally but different internally. Throat size, jet size, and ect.

The 85 has small exhaust ports and different port timing. The ports are 4 hole about the size of you ring finger. The 90's are larger and about the size of you middle finger and port eight is a little higher

You can use the 115 carbs on the 85. They have larger throats, so will move more air/fuel. Likely the 115 carbs may overfuel somewhat, so you may need to rejet them lower slightly. They will make more hp on that block once you get the carbs dialed in. Both blocks are 99.6 cubic inchers.

On all the 85 / 90 HP blocks that I have the INTAKE ports in the cylinder are smaller than the 115 /140 HP blocks.

been there done that... the 79 85hp carbs are 1 inch bore and only have 2 jets.
the 115 has 1 3/16 or 5/16 and 3 jets.
both of thoses carbs i believe dont have the primer nipples and the engines dont have the recirculation system for fuel return.

IMO its not worth the hassle. run ti the way it was engineered

Intake ports , also called tranfer ports in the cylinder wall are smaller on the 85 / 90 HP blocks.

Both carbs have the conventional choke system, which is conveneint for a swap. The recirc system came later-83 and later. I run a set of older (1974) 135 carbs on my 1979 85 hp Johnson engine. It was ported during overhaul and initially overfueled with the 135 carbs (1 5/16" size), requiring a reduction in the main jet size. It really hauls the mail now..
