Friend of mine has a 1989 150 Evinrude. He noticed it has a crack in the foot of lower unit. There was also a little oil under it. Does the lower unit have to be replaced? Engine was fine last spring, forward and reverse no problem. Any suggestions?

Where is the crack ??----Explain with a picture.-----Oil under a lower unit on a 2 stroke does not always indicate a problem !

leaking lower unit oil looks like....oil. Could be exhaust residue (black), maybe coming from somewhere else. If there is a crack, he might be able to patch it or have it welded (depends on where and how extensive). If the crack was caused by a collision with something, he will want to be sure there is not additional damage.

Thanks. I haven't seen crack. I was also searching for lower unit. A fellow has one but wants to know if is 60 degree of 90 degree. How can you tell?

By the way the crack he believes was caused by water freezing up.

pretty common, but I've never dealt with repairs (might be more than the housing at issue). May need one of the pro-techs here to chime in (Raceone?)

See if the propshaft bearing carrier is held in with 4 bolts deep inside or 2 bolts / tabs near the prop.------Driveshaft length may be different also.----Shop carefully as the 2 do not interchange.
