Johnson 9.9 tiller gears question

I have a 1985 Johnson 9.9 that I'm working on. On the tiller arm, the gears that interlock jumped a couple of teeth. Upon inspection the shaft gear has a broken tooth. The gears are really sloppy. After reading some of LeeRoys ramblings! I plan to shim this section up. My question is should I try and use it with the broken tooth? That shaft gear is way to expensive to replace. I think my only option would be to have someone braise a new tooth.
I'd really like to try it shimmed up, but am I just putting off the inevitable?
Thanks

Or you could try some of the salvage yards at the top of the page or look on e-bay; you may get lucky and find cheaper. Good luck

Lots of those motors were built.----Should be lots of used / parts motors around.---A lot depends on your locale.
