Looking for input/crafty ideas on how to dis-lodge Lower Unit pinion gear from driveshaft. I have the pinion gear retaining nut removed, but the gear is stuck up on there pretty good. Im not the type of mechanic to pry on stuff (I considered trying to get a short screwdriver in behind it from inside the case, but ruled that out). I can raise the driveshaft about a 1/4 inch so I have been trying to use the driveshaft as a slide hammer, but I can't get a good enough "whack" on it to break it free. I been thinking about how I can attach my slide hammer to top of driveshaft etc. Anyone have any ideas???

Put a wedge between the clutch dog and the drive shaft.-----Then give the propshaft a bump with a rubber mallet.

Problem solved...I remembered my Mercury manuals said to hang LU by driveshaft in soft-jawed vise and tap down on top of LU with rubber mallet. Actually I had to use (carefully) a dead-blow mallet...it popped right off! Thanks
