1977 35 hp Evinrude pull start issue

Ok had some trouble with this motor on the lake in summer.Figured on some winter maintenance.Pulled the lower unit ,checked impeller put everything back together.Changed the fuel pump and hoses.I replaced the head gasket,water jacket gasket and exhaust cover gasket.Pistons and cylinder walls looked fine.I cleaned up a lot of gunk in the water jacket.I try to start it and thought I would rip my arm off! I take the plugs out it pulls nice and smooth.The thing ran nice on the water except for a fuel leakage problem on the fuel pump which I replaced.Any thoughts?

Did you have the flywheel off ??

guessing this motor took a dunk and still has hydrolock issues.

Can you pull it over slowly with the recoil , with the plugs in ?--------Had any spinach lately ?

Did you try cranking it several times with the plugs out to clear the cylinders.
It could have "hydrolock" issues from excess oil or fuel in the cylinders.

What sparkplugs are you using ?--Too long ?

Never took the flywheel off.The trouble I had was stalling.Changed the primer bulb and fuel pump and it was fine.Yes I can pull it over with the plugs in but not enough to get it to fire.

Will the spark jump a 7/16" open air gap on a spark tester ??

Spark is fine.Noticed this evening that everytime I pulled rope sounded like air coming from under carb.Took the carb off and listened as I pulled and heard air coming from this hole under the carb.Backpressure?

???????-----I would say that hole is where air enters the cowling for the motor to run. ?????
