1990 evinrude 70 hp shift disconnect

Trying to remove lower unit to service water pump,, where do you disconnect the shift linkage to pull the lower unit? thanx

Look for the small hitch pin on the shift lever.--Pull that out and push the shift lever to the port side of the motor.-Almost no tools required.

On my 1990 60HP, I had to remove the starter, loosen the VRO pump and tilt it up out of the way to get enough room to disconnect the linkage.It is about center and under everything.

Now that you've seen how the shift link engages, you will make it blindly next time.

Rick, you should have read post#2. Racerone is correct. Very simple to do.

OK I'll give it a rub thanks

I tried pulling the pin and pushing in on the horizontal shaft and nothing happens It seems like there is more I have to disconnect I probably DO have to pull the starter and swing the VRO out of the way. we'll see thanx tho

Pull the pin and push the crank to the port side and rotate clockwise.-------No other tools required !!

If you have the correct pin, you may have to remove the shift cable from the arm to get the arm to move to port. Did you get the pin out of the shaft ??. It's on the stbd side of the motor.
