Johnson gear shifter

Changing throttle is possible but the shifting is hard.

I know that the lever is a bit old, but does anyone have any suggestions?

Would replacing the whole thing solve the problem?

It may be just the cable.Disconnect it at the engine . Does it move freelly now?.If so you may want to replace it. Perhaps take the shifter box apart and apply a few dabs of grease. With the cable disconnected from the engine does the engine shift easily? If not apply grease to the zirk fittings. Your shift/ throttle box appear to be in good shape for its age.A little corrosion showing that a good cleaning is needed. Work with it first. Unless you have lots of money then you may replace it.

Due to it's age, it sounds like bad cables. Just a guess.

Have to agree with boobie. Those boxes are very simple and sturdy. Cables do wear out or become corroded but they are also an easy fix. And at the same time that it's open to replace the cables clean it up real well and apply some good grease to the few moving parts.

Motor must be running or someone must turn the prop in order to shift most OMC products.----If throttle is too far advanced then shifting function may be blocked by the interlock mechanism.
