my 1958 johnson sea horse 3 hp acts like prop is not engaged

I just bought this little fishing boat for me and my daughters to go fishing with I just tried to take it on the water this morning
and motor was running ok put for some reason it acted like the prop was not engaged is there anyone out there that can
shade some light on this problem thanks

Take the prop off, and check for a broken shear pin.

one more question should I be able to turn the prop my hand with the motor off I was thinking its a direct drive

No, you shouldn't be able to turn the prop by hand (if you did, it would turn the motor over)

yes very easily if the shear pin is broken

and if the shear pin is not broken the engine will turn as well (disconnect the plug wires first !!!!!)

ok thanks can u all help me out with the what the adjuster on the left of the motor its like a t-handle not sure what it does

Without seeing a photo of the motor, I would say it's the throttle handle. Push it backward to slow the motor, pull it forward to increase speed.

ok you are right I broke the shear pin thanks so much do u think I could get away with making a shear pin out of a nail of same thickness

Sure you can. I would suggest getting the right pin though.

You should really think about making an order for a few of the shear pins. I would go through the motor and see what else needs replaced and make just one order. That old motor I would think needs to have it's water pump impeller replaced as well.

Here's the gear case break down on a 3 HP. Part 32 is the pin.

Don't make from a nail. It'll get rusted stuck and very difficult to remove.

t-handle is fuel shut-off valve..
