I have a 1990 40 hp Johnson(vro disconnected) that will just not idle correct or cold start. Spray a little premix in and she starts right up..I took the carbs off, soaked, and blew out. It runs a little rough even once she gets going. Can someone please explain the link and sync process for this engine?

You really need a manual to do this properly. Its not difficult just several steps done in the proper order. Along the lines of verify timing pointer. set timing. assure throttle plates close at same time. adjust cam follower. adjust carb….idle speed is in there somewhere. Get a manual. Even one of the cheap ones probably has the correct procedure but cant say for sure. If I happen to go to the shop this weekend i will grab one and post it but no promises. Too busy plowing snow up here.

You need a factory service manual. All the correct procedures are in there.

Yup, OEM manual by far the best and a must have for that type work.
