A local dealer has a pair of ficht 2003 Evinrude on sale and the counter rotation has fewer hours. Aside from the counter rotation motor docking a little weird (the stern would thrust differently), is there any other disadvantage ?

Does a counter rotation drive motor like this have other serious issues?
Does it think that it is running in reverse ?

I love the E-tecs, but this is cheap. $3,400, 300 hrs. ?

Thanks,
happy turkey.

If the motors were a pair wouldn't they have the same amount of run time? I don't know about the counter-rotation question.

Nope. Troll with one most of the time. Try to alternate to keep hours from piling up on one motor.

A counter rotator is nothing more than a gear change in the lower unit. Power head doesn't know the difference

read somehwere that the torque on a standard rotation outboard has a tendency to lift the right side of the boat which is why the steering consodle in mounted on the right...

a counterrotation engine will torque the left side of the boat upwards and if the steering console is mounted on the right side this will increase the tendency of the boat to veer to the right. the adjustment fin on the skeg may not be enough to correct this tendency to veer right.

in theory anyhow,.....

dingbat's correct. No difference except the prop spins to the left to go forward instead of to the right. From the lower gearcase up they are identical motors.

Thanks for the information.

So if the counter rotation motor is a better price with less hours - go for it ?

Yes. I've seen a lot of counter rotators on single motor applications and no problems.

...just curious, but are props harder to find, more expensive for cr motors?

Hard to find......Yes and no. Yes in Iowa ....no on the coast.

More expense.....yes ... Supply and demand

Yes, but with all motors, have it checked out first by someone who knows motors just to make sure you're not buying a money pit.

Do yourself a favor and look online to see what selection of props are avail in LH rotation. If there are a good selection, it is not an issue.

Of course you can pick up a std rotation gearcase from SEI for $1K or so.

I run a 2000 Johnson 150 hp Oceanpro with counter rotation; runs perfectly with no issues whatsoever related to prop rotation. There may be an issue related to availability of props, but for someone who is selling a prop, I would suggest that prices would be lower from less demand for counter rotating props. After checking out the engine properly with a proper satisfactory compression test and possibly an actual "test drive" , I would not hesitate to purchase.
