Hi Ben, welcome to iboats.

Different motors have different controls. On my outboard, you pull the choke lever out, then start the motor, then push it in. The center button is actually the kill switch. Users won't be able to help you with the limited information you have provided. Go onto the motors section of iboats and post your question in the section relating to your motor. Good luck!

You will probably get a better response from the johnson/evinrude engine repair and maintenance section of this forum, and they will need to know your HP. They use different fuel systems in different size motors.

Pushing the center button and the lever forward advances the throttle without the motor going into gear, which often helps when cold starting, but it is a different thing than using the choke. Most outboard chokes are engaged remotely but pushing in on the ignition key while turning it.

Kinda hard to give much meaningful input without the year and hp of the engine. Your description of a push button points to what many folk think is a choke while it is actually a solenoid activated primer.
