1977 35 hp Evinrude shifting

Took the lower end off my motor. Impeller looks good, seemed to be low on gear oil. Splines all look good. My question is how easy should it be to move the shift rod up and down?

have you tried rotating the prop while you move the shift rod? you should be able to pull/push by hand, but it may seem tight.

Tried rotating prop shift linkage will move only slightly.

Normal. There are detents in there to make it snap in and out of gear. You have to apply considerable pressure to overcome the detent spring and make it "snap".
