I was just wondering on the dry weight on the motor itself. I am trying to figure out if the older motors are heavier than the newer.
So would my 1965 40hp Motor be heavier than a 2000 35hp motor??

Earlier question asked was "What boat are you thinking of putting this motor on" Suggest answering this as well. New 2 stroke or 4 stroke motors ?? that makes a difference as well.

The 65 40 was available in 3 models Bigtwin manual,132,Electric 145,Lark 159.
To stick with Evinrude the 40,50 and 60 hp Etec are basically 240 lbs.

+1 the '65 40hp weighs about 130-140lbs. Generally speaking, newer motors of similar hp actually weigh more than the vintage models. Particularly if it's a 4-stroke engine, which can weigh 30%-40% more than their vintage, 2-stroke cousins. Of course, if you add electric start, electric trim and tilt to the modern motor can weigh even more. While some new motor have better fuel consumption on paper, their extra weight can often offset some of the savings.

It is interesting how the older outboard motors are often assumed to be heavier than their modern counterparts but are not. A 1966 40hp would have been measured at the power head so if there is a 15% loss from the head to the prop then a 40hp would only measure 34hp by todays standards. It is still lighter per HP though, just not quite as much as it first looks. I like to see some real data concerning my assumed 15% as I'm just repeating what I've read here.

I've never seen any actual data on the flywheel rated motors But I think it is more like 5 to 10% less than prop rated.
I also feel you would need a gps to tell the difference.

+1. I think the difference in "seat of the pants" hp is marginal. People seem assume vintage motors are heavier a.) because they're just plain old, b.) because they do tend to be rather bulky, but there's lots of empty space under the cowls, like an old car's hood, whereas modern 2 and 4 stroke motors may look smaller at a glance, but are stuffed to the gills under the cowl with all sorts of mysterious, computerized gizmos and black boxes which primarily run on voo-doo and black magic (I think) which is why I try to avoid them.
