Trying to replace the water pump impeller. What's the catch to get the lower unit to drop. Everything I read says to disconnect the shifting rod below the carb, behind the starter. The rod makes a 90 degree turn. Not gonna work. Please help!

on some of those older ones you disconnect the shift rod behind the water intake screen. There also could be a place on the midsection where you can remove a cover and disconnect the shift rod there. just depends on the model.

oh yeah, if it is behind the intake screen dont lose the little plastic "jesus" clips, as in "jesus, where did that fly to?"

Although the top of the shift rod has a "dogleg", it does drop down thru the lower cowl and exhaust housing. It passes thru rubber grommets in the cowl and housing. Tie a string or thin wire to the top of it when removing to help guide it back up when re-installing. Don't rotate the shift rod, changing the height. There is no screw behind the water intake on that engine, the shift rod is one piece from the gearcase to the linkage behind the carb. Removing the starter makes it easier to get to the top screw.
