Quick question: What is the difference between the 'regular' Johnson 35 hp outboard from 1957 and the 'Javelin'?

Both were sold. Why?

The Javelin was the chromed out, fancier model. Same powerhead, gearcase, etc... though.

Same goes for the '56 javelin, and the '58 SSH

+1. The Javelins were just the fancy, deluxe models with lots of chrome and bling, but otherwise just a basic "Big Twin" 35hp.

Marketing :watermelon:

Must have worked, because 56yrs later, I have 1 of each.... Wish the Golden Javelin was in 1/2 as good a shape as the other, ESP the cowl's chrome....

I think I have 5 or 6 57 javelins now, lol.

The chrome is the most important part to get in good shape. It can be re chromed, but it is not cheap. I am also a fan of the 58 Super Quiet and have a couple of them as well.

The Evinrudes of those years are very similar to the Johnsons except for the cowlings. EDIT: Se TN-25's post below.

The deluxe 30 of 1956 was the Javelin, becoming the Golden Javelin 35 for '57, then the Super Sea Horse for '58. It was in '58 that there were important functional differences between the regular Sea Horse 35 & the Super Sea Horse 35 other than just cosmetics, standard electric start & a starter handle cover. The Super Sea Horse received the new double-walled Super Quiet lower unit that housed a sophisticated cooling system complete with water recirculation path & a thermostat. They also used a fuel pump with non-pressurized fuel tank.

Evinrude's deluxe version of the Big Twin was the Lark, starting with the 30-horse 1956 model)

Step # 1 is to find a new set of O/S pistons.-----But bigger pistons will not give more power that you will notice on the speedometer.
