Hi,
I have found myself rebuilding the lower unit on my 1971 60 hp Johnson. My question is, does every lower unit require shimming the drive shaft? There were no shimms when took it apart. Although the manual talks about shimming, it doesn't show shimms in the parts diagram. Do you think I would be OK not shimming it now? Anyone know the measurement it should be?

Re: 1971 Johnson 60 hp drive shaft shimming question

Parts book for 1971 60hp does not show any shims in that model. Pretty safe bet it doesn't require any.

EDIT: To double check, I looked up the 1972 65hp model and it does take shims. Reason: It has a different drive shaft & thrust bearing design. So, 1971 no shims, 1972-up requires shims.

Wow, you just made my day. I guess this model has one good thing about it.
