Screen gone from lower unit intake

J70TLCEM-1989-OVER HEATED ,lifted motor thinking plastic bag wrapped around lower unit. sreen is gone from intake. where could it have gone(sucked in to impellar?)i am not boat guy but this is unusual?completely gone-no sign of it ever being there. wher do i start? iassume it needs to be replaced to be save. probably need impelllar kit? please help,,thank you for your time.rbass

I'd guess that the plastic got brittle from old age and broke apart. You'll need to pull the lower unit to remove the old one and install a new one, and you'll definitely want to replace the impeller while you've got the lower unit off.

did not realize it was plastic,someone suggested i remove exhaust maifold cover and clean out debree. then replace with new gasket. would you agree? thank you for your time ...rbass
