How do I determine if my starter and solonoid are working properly or if need to be replaced. 1977 70 hp Evinrude

What was it doing prior to taking them off? If the starter was engaging, but working slowly, then it's not the solenoid. Could be starter, could be wiring leading up to starter.

If it is the American-Bosch type starter, it's easy enough to check the brushes. Pull bottom cap and look for wear. New brushes are close to 3/4 inches long. Worn ones will likely be right down to where the wire is cast in. Easy and inexpensive to replace, too. To reassemble, it helps to have a second set of hands to hold two flat putty knives to hold the brushes down while you place the armature and upper housing back in place.
