Which one is better? I have the 50hp Evinrude now, I've been thinking about upping my power a bit.. :joyous: though and i found the 80hp Johnson for sale but I am oblivious as to whether that would be a good upgrade or not. Someone Johnson-savvy help me out.

Thanks,
Dave

huge difference between a 2 cylinder 50hp or even the V4 50hp and a V4 80hp.

The engines are of the same lineage, both V4s, the 50 being the smaller 70.7 cu in model and the 80 using the later 89.5 cu in block. Neither engine is miserly with the fuel. The 50 utilizes a slower turning 13 inch dia prop while the 80 has high reving smaller 10 inch dia prop, unless it has the Heavy duty gearcase then it the same as the 50. These engines being approx 55 and 47 yrs old can pose problems for obtaining parts.

retro, looking back on the photos in both threads I see that the 50hp is a mechanical shift and the 80hp is an electric shift. I would keep the older 50hp if I had a choice of the 2.

Gee, try to get a newer motor. That Fat Fifty will push a canoe or a barge at a max of 27MPH, at least in my experience. It will also dump up to 1/3 of your fuel overboard, unburnt.
Get a nice 3 cylinder 70 or something, from the 70s or 80s.
