1985 Johnson 25HP Rewind Starter Slow Rewinding

New to me CJ25RLCOS that was run long and hard by PO in saltwater. Rewind starter seems very slow rewinding based on my experience. Not seeing any salt corrosion as I first suspected. Before I start disassembling, any suggestions for cleaning, lubrication, gotchas, etc.?

Remove it from the motor and turn it upside down. Dump a bunch of solvent such as mineral spirits in it (or submerge it) and pull the rope a few times. Drain. That may be all it needs.
