1983 Evinrude 115 charging at 16 volts

Hello

I am trying to get some electronics working on my boat however the charging system is putting out 16 volts. I have read here that this is pretty standard with some the older motors. Whats the best way to deal with the higher voltage output by these systems. I am using a marine grade, group 27 starting battery. Should I change to a reg/rec from a later, regulated system?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

BRP makes a regulator for this. Part # 173640.
