Broken skeg should I replace with guard or weld on a new one?

I have a 1979 Evinrude 85999r and when I bought the boat the skeg looks like it was dragged through the rock beds of the Mississippi. In the fall, when I am done boating I am wondering would you repair the skeg with a Skeg guard or would you weld on a new one. There is enough there for me to use for this year, I just had to bend it back into shape a little. I have looked into the guards, but I cannot find one that will work for my boat. I have been on a hunt for the original skeg dimensions, but so far I cannot find anything. If you have a place to find it, I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

When you put it up for the winter.... and you put a new impeller in...have a new alum pc welded on. Atleast that's what i would do!

Well winter for you could be Jan/Feb.............:joyous:

Look for a good prop shop as they may be able to help you.
