1971 50 hp evinrude drive shaft seals

still workin on my 1971 50 hp evinrude. I have another problem. I am trying to replace the seals on the drive shaft in the lower unit but the plate under the water pump wont come off. It will come up about a half inch but stops. Looking at a diagram it looks like it should slide right off but it won't. Any ideas why it's not sliding off the drive shaft?

Are you talking about the bearing housing with the 4 bolts?
Use a couple of flat bladed screwdrivers, one on each side and gently pry it out and out of the gearcase.

yes the bearing housing. I have tried that and won't move. No matter how much I pry on it it seems to be stuck. But it is supposed to slide up and off the drive shaft? I'll keep trying.

If it comes up 1/2", it should come up all the way.
