Are these power heads interchangeable? Reason why I ask because I believe the 72 is hydro? and the 73 is electronic? can I just switch everything over onto the other power head and it will work fine?

My 1973 power head blew a connecting rod bearing.. and I found a 1972 power head on eBay for a good deal. with good compression.

Will they work out okay?

Thanks in advanced!

You are correct, the '72 is Hydro-Electric shift. '73 is Power assisted mechanical shift (you said electronic???). I really don't know about the powerhead differences, but there probably are a few. For one thing the '72 isn't going to have any provision for shift linkage.

I see, didnt seem like much was involved when taking apart my power head. Thats why I was wondering. when you say mechanical shift. im assuming thats just for the gears in the lower end, not necessarily the power head.?

Sorry for the stupid questions, just trying to understand it. Wondering if this is the better rout, or to just buy a 1988 70hp johnson..
