flooding/idle setting 1979 55hp Johnson

Hi all,
My motor runs great when warm. However, at cold start it runs for 5 seconds and will stall, unless I am quick on the throttle and up it to half throttle.....obviously opening up the throttle plate to let it breath. Choke solenoid and choke linkage/plate position is good and works well. Idle setting is good as once warm it will idles perfectly. Looking for any ideas? Can the warm up lever setting be increased or is that the wrong approach?

I have seen some engines, that when cold, you have to keep activating the choke a few times to keep them running the first minute or so.

Try the choke trick.

Unfortunately it stalls even if I use the choke initially. It is a flooding issue and if I am quick on the throttle I can prevent it from flooding. The choke and solenoid is set and works perfect. What puzzles me is the motor starts perfect when warm. Thanks in advance for any other ideas.
