Looking at buying a 1975 johnson 50 hp for the boat. never owned a johnson, anyone else have this engine? how is it? I had a 1990 40 merc which 2 fuel hoses ended up costing 1000's in damage.....dealer wants $700.

any help with this outboard would be great

I have a '74 and think it's a great motor. I'm still fine tuning mine but it has enough power to push a 17' tri-hull. Not real fast but it will plane.

The motor is a good motor. Those two-stroke two cylinder single carb JOhnson/evinrudes are super easy to work on, as they have about 18 moving parts (just kidding, but it feels that way). Parts are still available for these motors.

All that having been said, $700 is a tad high for a an almost 40 year old motor. My opinion.

My 74 has two carbs. Did they change in 75? I paid 50 bucks for mine, compression was good when I went to look at it. Got it home and it cranked right up. Rebuilt the carbs, new coils, plugs and wires, fuel lines. Ran like a champ but now has electrical problem I need to chase down but still a good strong motor. Hard to go wrong on an outboard for 50 bucks even if you cant check the compression
