Hello All, it is my first time posting on this site.

I just picked up a 1956 Johnson 30 HP. The motor has been in my family for close to 50 years. For the past 30 years she has been sitting in my fathers garage.

I just resealed the lower unit. I pressurized the lower unit and passed. (Thanks to the help from this message board) Now with the new water pump installed and the lower unit back on the outboard. I have run into a question about Oil and gas mixture. A guy at my local Marine parts store told me to use Johnson XD50 Oil and to mix it 50:1. I even confirmed with him "So I use 50:1 in a 1956 johnson that use to call out 24:1?".

I just wanted to check with you all and see what you recommend? And is XD50 the best oil to use?

Thank you in advanced for your help!

Welcome to the forum.
There are a lot of thoughts on the proper oil/fuel ratio using the newer oils. If it were me I would use a good oil and mix it 24:1, and not look back.

+1. A motor of that era needs 24:1 mix. Make sure you use TCW-III, 2-stroke, outboard oil. You can usually get a quart from Wal-mart for about $5. You can use any brand you like. You'll want to use Champion J6C spark plugs as well. Here are some handy links to keep your motor running another 50 years. You can get any routine part like carb kits, impellers, etc...right here at iboats.

The XD50 is not really needed. XD30 is the oil I recommend. You will love its low smoke, low odour qualities. Leaves less sheen on the water than some cheaper brands if you are a tree hugger :)

In mid 1960s after OMC switched the engines to 50:1(1964), OMC introduced their own brand of oil. In the US there were Evinrude 50:1 and Johnson 50:1 oils, in Canada it was called OMC outboard oil. In 1973 OMC did issue a service bullitin saying that the 50:1 Ratio could be used in ALL the engines that were speced at 24:1 but only if the OMC brands of oil were used.
