I need to replace the impeller in my 1990 Evinrude 88 SPL. I can find plenty of films and instructions on how to replace Evinrude Impellers, but not on the 88 SPL. Can anyone help me find a good video or instructions? Also, I haven't looked up the impeller part number yet. That would help as well. Please help!!! Thanks - Dmay

It should be pretty mich the same on all the motors like yours, disconnect the shift linkage, remove the bolts that hold the lower unit on and you should be good to go. Look at the parts breakdown below to locate all of the bolts that hold the lower unit on, you can also get the part number for the impeller and find your best deal. Make sure to check here at iboats and see what they have.

Dmay,
All Johnson/Evinrude V-4 outboard impellers are about the same.....even today. Try to get a manual and you will be all set. I just purchased a complete Johnson/Evinrude Water Pump Kit (here at IBoats) and it had everything I needed, could have needed, or DID need in one single box. $70 Bucks or so. To me, it was well worth the peace-of-mind to have all the gaskets and seals I needed on a Sunday afternoon replacement.

Your shift linkage under the bottom carb is the later design. It has the quick-disconnect for the shift rod under the bottom carb. A nice feature. An original factory manual is the way to go!

There is a hidden bolt you will need to look out for that holds the lower unit on. Up under the trim tab plate if I remember.
Sure wish I had someone tell me about it the first time I changed mine.
Shift lever a bit tricky. don't loose the fastener.
Oh, the plastic key for the impeller shaft can be held in place with a small amount of grease. Kinda hard to get it back together without the key slipping out of place.
It's been a while since I changed mine but these tips should help

Something else to consider. If you are changing the impeller bc it was overheating, that motor has deflector tubes behind the heads that flatten out and can cause an overheat condition. I had that happen and I was able to do it myself even though it involved pulling heads off. Gaskets are the most expensive item so it's not too bad cost wise.
