96 evinrude 70 hp reg/resistor 585001

I ordered and received a regulator/rectifier 585001 for my old 96 evinrude 70 hp outboard.
However, it only has 4 wires coming out of it. The original equiptment has 5. the purple wire(ignition?) is missing on the new unit. The schematic show a Y("terminal ring") that goes on the red wire. That kind of infers that the purple and red connectors can be strapped together, however, when I try that, the ignition is hot regardless of whether or not the key is in place.

HELP!!!!

just a unqualified comment on that motor but purples normally choke primer

Yes, the purple wire is missing due to a design change. The regulator should have come with a little note explaining that. The four lead design makes the regulator also suitable for older rectifier-only motors.
So leave the purple wire unconnected. No Y or jumper connection.

if your original rectifier has more wires then the new one is wrong.

now just because it says 585001 don't mean its the right one !!!!!! there is also another code on the side of these, check that number too.

I have 3 that work and all got same amount and colour of wires !!!!!!

if he fits this without the purple that goes to remote box then where is the power going to come from ?
when I put the rectifier on mine without the purple wire I got nothing from the key !!!!!!!
when I re-fitted the purple it started up fine.

whats different ? and what was the point in the purple wire if it did nothing ?

I appreciate the input and the honesty.
I've spoken with a couple of different professional mechanics.... both were less forthcoming than you guys.
They mostly said "Uh... bring it in and we'll look at it and charge you $75 and hour to scratch our heads and guess whether or not we can answer your question.."
No thanks. This boat's my baby, has been for 15 years, and it'll live or die at my hands.

The purple wire is not required for the regulator / Rectifier anymore. The purple wire was used to get the rectifier to start working it was redesigned and the R / R is now self starting. The purple wire is hot when the ignition switch is on and provides power to accessories like the tach. See the attached diagram that shows the ignition switch and what is energized and when.

If you hook the purple to the red at the rectifier your tach and system check gauge if equipped will always be on along with any other accessories that you have hooked to the purple wire.
