1994 48HP SPL Evinrude Lower unit removal without forward

Hi, I am trying to remove the lower unit on my 48 evinrude, but I cannot shift into forward to get the lower unit to drop. How can I remove the unit?

Follow Up:

I was able to remove the lower unit. I just had to wiggle it out properly as my shift rod was bent up
