Chrysler Starter Solenoid in an Evinrude?

Hello.

I have an old Chrysler 2cyl outboard.
I believe it is from the 1960's.
I just bought a 1963 Evinrude Big Twin.
My question is, can I use the Starter Solenoid switch from the Chrysler, in the Evinrude?
The Chrysler one has three connection posts.
One small and two larger ones.
I know that the Evinrude calls for 4 connection posts.
However one post is used as a ground.
Can't I just ground the solenoid by connecting a ground wire to it's base?
Hoping this will work, as I already have the solenoid on hand.

Thanks

It can be made to work. HOWEVER you won't have the protection that the safety switch provides. That safety switch prevents you from starting the motor in gear and at high throttle settings......and running over something or somebody. Hopefully, that somebody won't be me.

That is what I was wondering.
I would rather pay for a new one that fits my model.
Then maybe cause an accident.
Thanks for the feed back.

No, the safety switch is on the motor. Current goes through the solenoid coil to the safety switch, to ground. The reason it has two small terminal posts. Chrysler solenoid with only one small terminal post is grounded at the solenoid mount instead of through the safety switch.

OK, got it. I guess it would be too much work to run hot through the neutral switch wouldn't it?
