I have a 1970 85hp Evinrude that I have been trying to get running correctly. I have rebuilt the carbs, impeller and put on new head gaskets. Its got a good spark and good compression. It runs really good, but it seems like it is using a excessive amount of fuel. The pick up tube in the tank broke and the fuel line was collapsed on the inside, so I bought regular automotive fuel line and just stuck it down in the tank where the pick up tube was. Could this be making it use more fuel? Like I said it runs really good. The people here have been a great help with other issues and hopefully can help with this. Thank you in advance.

8.5 gallons per hour at wide open throttle maybe more, maybe less depending on boat load and weather conditions. SO..... a 6 gallon tank can be gone in under one hour. Yes, the V-4 motors can be thirsty if you are heavy on the throttle....... that's the reason to find the sweet spot when cruising.
