Hi I just bought a boat with a 1992 Johnson 60 hp 3 cyl and the middle piston is burnt and likely wrecked the block , but I would like to know if I can put the entire block and carbs etc from a 1983 Johnson 70 hp 3 cyl in to my 1992 frame and leg. I'm really mechanically inclined I am just unsure if the older 70 will fit in the newer 60 frame before I go out and buy the parts motor. Thanks any input will be sweet

Or can I put my trim and tilt and mounting brackets and my leg on a 1983 Johnson 70?

it should fit providing you take the 1983 adapter & exhaust over to the 1992 leg as the adapter to blocks are different designs the 1983 exhaust & adapter will fit the leg & also the exhaust bottom end will fit into 1992 gearbox

Ok so I should be able to bolt on the 83 power head and use the 83 exhast tube and the 1992 midsection? That about the driveshaft will the 1992 one work on the 83 because the motor I would get would not have a leg or driveshaft. Thanks

The only difference is the powerhead mounting bolts as the pre 1986 use a 5/16 and the later use a 3/8 other than that plates are the same..

It will bolt up and only thing you need change is top adapter plate you can leave lower plate and exhaust tube alone....

The crankshaft splines are different between the two so whichever way you go, make sure the '83 powerhead ends up with the '83 gearcase. The '83 powerhead will NOT work with the splines of the '92 gearcase.

Ok so can I put the splined shaft from a 83 gearcase into the 92 gearcase?

Yes - just makes for more work and you'll likely have to have a dealer do it to make it correct - special tools, shims, etc.
